This Bacchus ( 6 ) was caught in bed in Phrygiawith Venus the mother of fEneas, according c to Homer, juftbefore he came over the Hellefpont, and invaded Thrace ; andhe married Ariadne the daughterof Minos, according to Hefiod d :and the re fore by the teftimony of both Homer and Hefiod, whowrote before the Greeks and Egyptians corrupted their antiqui-ties, this Bacchus was one generation older than the Argonauts ;and fo be.ing king of Egypt at the fame time with Sefoftris, theymuft be one and the fame king. For they agree alfo in their ac-ti ons : Bacchus invaded India and Greece ; and after he was rout-ed by the army of Perfeus, and the war was compofed, theGreeks did him great honours, and built a temple to him at Ar-gos, and called it the temple of the Crefian Bacchus, becaufeAriadne was buried in it, as Paufanias e relates. Ariadne there-fore died in the end of the war, juft before the return of Sefof-tris into Egypt; that is, in the iq.th year of Behoboam. Shewas taken from Naxus upon the return of Bacchus from India,and then became the miftrefs of Bacchus, and accompanied himin his triumphs. And therefore the expeclition of Thefeus toCrete, and the death of his father fEgeus, was about ni ne orten years after the death of Solomon. Thefeus was then abeardlefs young man, fuppofe about 19 or 20 years old; andAndrogeus was flain about twenty years before, being then about20 or 22 years old; and his father Minos might be about 25years older, and fo be born about the middle of David’s reign,
