In the days of Erechtheus king of AthensJ 1 ), and Ge-lus king of Eleufis (*), Ceres came into Attica ; and educatedTripolemus the fon of Celeus, and taugkt him to, fow corn.She a lay with Jafion., or Jafius, the brother of Harmonia thewife of Cadmus*; and prefently after her death. Erechtheus wasflain, in a war between the Athenians and Eleulihians ; and, forthe benefadtion of bringing tillage into Greece,. the Eleufian Sa-cra were inftituted to her b with Egyptian ceremonies, by Celeusand Eumolpus ( 3 ); and a fepulchre or temple was erecfted t®her in Eleufine, and in this temple the families of Celeus andEumolpus became her priefts : and this temple, and that whichEurydice erecfted to her daughter Danae, by the name of JunoArgiva, are the firft inftances that I meet with in Greece of dei-fying the dead, with temples, and facred rites, and facrifices, andinitiations, and a fucceflion of priefls to perform them. Nowby this hiftory it is manifefl that Erechtheus, Celeus, Eumolpus,Ceres, Jafius, Cadmus, Harmonia, Afterius ( 4 ), and Dardanusthe brother of Jafius, and one of the founders of the kingdomof Troy, were ali contemporary to one another, and flourilhedin their youth, when Cadmus came firft into Europe. Erech-theus could not be much older, becaufe his daughter Procris con-verfe-d with Minos king of Crete ( 5 ) ; and his grandfon Thef-pis ( r> ) had fifty daughters, who lay With Hercules ; and his
