They coulcl not bemuch older; becaufe Xuthus, the youngeft fon of Hellen % rnar-riecl Creufa the daughter of Erechtheus: nor could they bemuch younger ; becaufe Cephalus the fon of Deioneus ("), the2. fon of ./Eoius ( I2 ), the eldeft fon of Hellen, b married Procris-the daughter of Erechtheus (“); and Procris fled from her huf-band to Minos ( ,3 ). Upon. the death of Hellen, his yoqogeftfon Xuthus c was expelled Tlieflaly by his brothers iEolus andDorus, and fled to Erechtheus, and married Creufa the daughterof Erechtheus ( I4 ) ; by whom he had two fons, Achaeus and Ion,.,the youngeft of which grew up before the death of Erechtheus,,and commanded the army of the Athenians, in the war in whichErechtheus was flain : and therefore Hellen died about one ge-neration before Erechtheus.

LXV. Sifyphus therefore built Corinth about the latter end ofthe reign of Solomon, or the beginning of the reign of Reho-boam. Upon the flight of Phrixus and Helle, their father Atha-mas, a little king in Bceotia, went diftracfted and flew his fonLearchus ; and his wife Ino threw herfelf into the fea, toge-ther with her other fon Melicertus ('); and thereupon Sifyphus

(®) This conclufion feems erroneous, cven upon our author’s own principies. If Pelops cameinto Greece in the days of Endymion, and came thither in the 26th of Solomon ; the a6th ofSolomon muft have fallen upon the days of Endymion, and Aethlius, the father of Endymion, cannot be pnt later than the beginning of Solomon. Therefore Calyce, the wife of Aethlius, herbrothers Sifyphus, Athamas, and Cretheus, muft have flourifhed in the beginning of Solomon. If the arrival of Pelops in Greece was, as Paufanias infimates, in the reign of Epeus the fonof Endymion ; then Endymion muft have flourifhed in the beginning of Solomon’s reign, and hisfather Aethlius and his mother Calyce, with her brothers, in the middle of David’s.

( M ) Hence Aiolus, Xuthus, and Dorus, the children of Hellen, were nearly contemporarywith Erechtheus. But thefe children of Hellen were grand-children of Deucalion : thereforecontemporary with Aethlius, who alfo was a grandlon of Deucalion. Therefore Aethlius wasalfo contemporary with Erechtheus.

Again, Pelops and Perfeus were contemporarie? (note 2). And Pelops, according to Sir TfaacKewton, was contemporary with Endymion. Therefore upon this fuppolition, Tantalus the fa-ther of Pelops (Pind. Olymp. 1. v. 58) and Danae the mother of Perfeus will have been con--j temporary
