C II R O N O L O G Y.phiiftyOnic council; and Acrifius foon after eredfted the like comi-ci! at Delphi ( 4 ). This I conceive was done when Amphi<5tyonand Acrifius were aged, and fit to be counfellors; fuppofe in thelatter half of the reign of David, and beginning of the reignof Solomon ; and foon after, fuppofe about the middle of tliereign of Solomon, did Phemonoe ( 5 ) become the firft prieftefsof Apollo at Delphi, and gave oracles in hexameter verfe : andthen was Acrifius flain accidentally by his grandfon Perfeus ( 6 ).The council of Thermopylae included twelve nations of theGreeks, without Attica, and therefore Amphidtyon did not thenreign at Athens: he might endeavour to fucceed Cranaus, hiswife’s father ( 7 ), and be prevented by Erechtheus.

LXV1I. Between the reigns of Cranaus and Erechtheus, chro-nologers place alfo Erichthonius, and his fon Pandion ; but Itake this Erichthonius and this his fon Pandion, to be the famewith Erechtheus and his fon and fuccefior Pandion, the namesbeing only repeated with a little variation in the lift of the kingsof Attica. For Erichthonius, he that was the fon of the Earth, nurfed up by Minerva, is by Homer (*) called Erechtheus; andThemiftius a telis us, that it was Erechtheus that firft joined achariot to horfes ; and Plato, b alluding to the ftory of Erichtho-nius in a bafket (*), faith, “ Thepeople of magnanimous Erech-" theus is beautiful, but it behoves us to behold him taken" out ( 3 ):” Erechtheus therefore immediately fucceeded Cranaus, while Amphictyon reigned at Thermopylae.
