And therefore the CretanSaturn and Rhea, were but one generation older than Chiron,and by confequence not older than Alterius and Europa, the pa-rents.of Minos. For Chiron lived till after the Argonautic ex-pedjtion, and had two grand.fons.in that expedition ( 2 ) ; and Eu-ropa came into Crete above an hundred years before that expedi-tipn. In Crete upon the fe-" pulchre of Minos was written, Minois Jovis fepulchrum: but“ in time Minois wore out, fo that there remained only Jovis Je-" pulchrum^ and thence the Cretans called it the fepulchre of Ju-ppiter.” By Saturn, Cicero, who was a Latine, underftood theSaturn fo called by the Latines: for when. Saturn was expelledhis.kingdom, he Red from Crete by fea to Italy ( 3 ) ; and this thepoets exprefled by faying, that Jupiter caft him down to Tarta-rus, that is, into the fea: and becaufe he lay hid in Italy, theLatines; ( 4 ) jcalled him Saturn ; and Italy, Saturnia and Latium;and themfelves Latines. and the towerd head. But I cannot find that he fays Europa was Rhea. For this temple at Hie-rapolis, which forne fuppofed to be Rhea’s, was quite different from the Phrygian temple, whichioml- uppoifed to be Europa’s. See Lucian de Dea Syria, § IV, XI, XV.
