For Ceres educated Triptolemus the fon of Cele-.us, in the reign of Erechtheus, and then taught him to plowand fow corn. Arcas the fon of Callifto, and grandfon of Ly-caon, received corn from Triptolemus, and taught his people tomake bread of it; and Procris, the daughter of Erechtheus, fledto Minos the fon of Afterius. In memory of Saturifs cominginto Italy by fea, the Latines coined their firft money with hishead on one fide, and a fhip on the other ( 6 ). Macrobius a telis’us, that when Saturn was dead, Janus erecfted an altar to him,with facred rites as to a God, and inftituted the Saturnalia, andthat human facrifices were offered to him ; till Hercules, drivingthe cattle of Geryon through Italy, abolifhed that cuftom. Bythe human facrifices, you may know that Janus was of the raceof Lycaon ( 7 ) ; which charadfer agrees to Oenotrus. DionyfiusHalicarnaflenfis telis us furtlier, that Oenotrus having found inthe weftern parts of Italy a large region fit for pafturage and til-lage, but yet for the moft part uninhabited, and where it wasinhabited, peopled but thinly ; in a certain part of it, purgedfrom the Barbarians, he built towns little and numerous, in themountains; which manner of building was familiar to the an-cients ( 8 ): and this was the original of towns in Italy.
LXXIII.
