LXXXII. Inachus is called the fon of Oceanus ('), perhapsbecaufe he came to Greece by fea. He might come with hispeople to Argos from Egypt in the days of Eli, and feat himfelfopon the river Inachus, fo named from him ('), and leave histerritories to his fons Phoroneus ('), ^Egialeus( I ), and Phegeiis (*),in the days of Samuel. For Car, the fon of Phoroneus, built atemple to Ceres in Megara ( 3 ), and therefore was contemporary toErechtheus. Phoroneus reigned at Argos ( 4 ), and ^g i alens atSicyon ( 5 ), and founded thofe kingdoms; and yet AEgialeus ismade above five hundred years older than Phoroneus by fornecl rono’ogers. But a Acufilaus, b Anticlides, and c Plato, account-ed Phoroneus the oldeR king in Greece; and d Apollodorus telisus, iEgialeus was the brother of Phoroneus ( 6 ). AEgialeus diedywithout iffue, and after him reigned Europs, Telchin, Apis, La-medon, Sicyon, Polybus, Adraftus, and Agamemnon, &c. and Si-cyon gave his name to the kingdom. Herodotus e faith, that Apisin the Greek tongue is Epaphus; and Hyginus, f that Epaphusthe Sicyonian got Antiopa with child. But the later Greeks havemade two men of the two names Apis and Epaphus, or Epopeus,and between them inferted twelve feigned kings of Sicyon, whomade no wars, nor did any thing memorable; and yet reignedfive hundred and twenty years, which is, one with another,above forty and three years a-piece ( 7 ). If thefe feigned kings berejedfed, and the two kings Apis and Epopeus be reunited, ^®gia-leus will become contemporary to his brother Phoroneus, as heought to be.
