Tliis Bacchus was there-tbre contemporary to Sefoftris ( 9 ) ; and both being kings of Egypt,and potent at fea, and great conquerors, and carrying on theirconquefts into India and Thrace, they muft be one and the fameman.
III. The ancient Greeks, who made the fables of the gods,related that Io, the daughter of Inachus, was carried into Egypt,.and there became the Eg-yptian .lfis (') ; and that Apis, the fon ofPhoroneus, after death became the god Serapis ( 2 ) ; and fornefaid that Epaphus was the fon of Io ( 3 ). Serapis and Epaphus-are Ofiris ( 3 ); and therefore Ilis and Ofiris,. in the opinion of theancient Greeks who made the fables of the gods, were not abovetwo or three generations okler than the. Argonautic expedition..Dicaearchus, as he is cited by the Scholiaft upon Apollonius, a re-’ Ar s°" flU ’-prefents them two generations older than Sefoftris; faying, thatafter Orus the fon of Ofiris and lfis, reigned Sefoncliofis. Hefeems to have followed the opinion of the peopleof Naxus, whomade Bacchus two generations older than Thefeus, and for thatend feigned two Minos’s and two Ariadnes: for by the confentof ali antiquity, Ofiris and Bacchus were one and the fame king;of Egypt, This is affirmed by the Egyptians, as well as by theGreeks; and forne of the antient mythologifts, as Eumolpus andOrpheus, h called Ofiris by the names of Dionyfus and Sirius..^ I ^° dor - 1 -Ofiris was king of ali Egypt, and a great conqueror, and came c - rz- ?- 9.
