The learnedWel-feling tabes this Dionyfius to be the Milefian, who is mentioned in Suidas as the aut hoc of aCyclus Hiltoricus, and other works in hifiory and mythology. It is from this Dionyfius thatDiodorus takes the account, which he gives, of Thymoetes and his writings. It does not ap-pear, that Diodorus had himfelf everfeen the poerns of Thymoetes, or that they were extant inhis time.

( 3 ) The unfuccefsful expedition of the Amazons, in times before the Trojan war, was farnouiin antiquity, and it was a favourite topic wirh the orators. It is mentioned by Plato in the Me-nexenus ; by Ifocrates, in his Panegyric ; and niore circumfiahtially dekribed by Lyfias, in hisPpitaphian. Lyfias agrees with Ifocrates, that not orte of this female army returned home. And he reprefents the unprofperous event of the expedition as the ruin of the nation.
