So then he had the collations oftwo more manufcripts, than Stephens has given us in print. Andthis was ali his furniture. The original manufcripts he does nothere pretend to have ; nor could he have them : for they werenot Stephens’s manufcripts; but belonged to feveral libraries inFrance and ltaly. i<r, Stephens had not out of his own library, but borrowedthem for a time from feveral places to collate, his friends fftudy-ing to promote the defign of his edition. And yet Beza in hisannotations, when he would favour any text, cites the collationsof Stephens in luch a manner, as if he had the very originalmanufcripts at Geneva before his eyes. And where Stephensdoes not cite various le&ions, there he reckons, that in the textof Stephens’s collated books he re ad ali the manufcripts. So inMark vi. ii, where Stephens notes a certain period to be want-ing in the manufcript copies £ and ; Bezafaith, “ Hac periodus" in omnibus exemplaribus Gracis legitur, exceptis fecundo et" odlavo .” In the Afts xiii. 33, becaufe Stephens had noted novarious le&ions, Beza affirms of the Greek text, " Ita fcriptum" invenimus in omnibus vetujlis codicibus .” In 1 John iv. 3,where Stephens is filent, Beza fpeaks, " Sic legitur in omnibus" Gracis exemplaribus, qua quidem mihi infpic er e licuit?
