A large piece had been cut out of the middle part of thependulum, from the face almost to the back, to clear awaythe damaged part of the wood ; and the vacuity was runfull of lead, from an idea that the pendulum would not sosoon be spoiled, and consequently that it would need lessrepairs. But this did not succeed at all; for the only shotwe discharged, namely, n° 9, would not lodge in the lead,but broke into a thousand small pieces, many of whichstuck in the lead, and formed a curious appearance ; butthe greater number rebounded back again, to the greatdanger of the bystanders. The ball made a large roundexcavation in the face of the lead, of S inches diameter inthe front, and 3 a inches deep in the centre of the hole.
Length of the charge of 16oz was 11 inches.
