87. Several of the experiments, of the two former yebeing not so regular as might be wished, we have again .undertaken to repeat some of.them, and to add still moreto the stock already obtained, that the mediums upon thewhole may be tolerably exact, the great number of repeti-tions counteracting the unavoidable small irregularities, anddeviations from the truth, in experiments instituted on solarge a scale. For this purpose, we begin with the gun n° 2,and use charges of 8 ounces of powder ; and have formedthe resolution of firing every shot into a fresh and soundpart of the block of wood, and changing the block veryfrequently, before it become too much battered, that thepenetration of the ball and the force of the blow may beobtained with the greater degree of accuracy.

It is also proposed to procure some good ranges, to com-pare them with the initial velocities made under the samecircumstances ; from the comparison of which we may esti-mate the effects of the resistance of the air, and so lay a
