the connecting link between the deerand the musks. It has the horns of theone, and the canine teeth of the other.

The most interesting part of the musksis the preputial musk sac. Cuvier (Rer/neAnimal, i. 259, nouv. ed. 1829) says noother species of Moschus possesses amusk sac; but this statement is notcorrect. M. Alta'icus Esclischoltz ( M.Moschiferus Altaicus Brandt), M. Napu, and M. Javanicus, are are also said topossess musk sacs.

Anatomy of the Musk Sac.The sac ispeculiar to the male animal. If lie be supposedto be laid on his hack, and the belly examined,we observe behind the navel, and immediately infront of the preputial orifice, a small aperture(external aperture of the musk sac) leading intothe musk canal, which terminates in the cavity ofthe musk sac. This aperture is about half an inchfrom the umbilicus, and usually about a line, ora line and a half, from the preputial orifice. Insome preparations in my possession the distanceis much greater. The preputial orifice is some-what more prominent, and has a number oflongish hairs projecting from it, in the form of abrush or hair-pencil J whereas the external muskaperture is placed in a depression, 1
