The relics alluded to consist of five tombstones,built into the north and south walls of the passageleading under the quadrangle from east to west.. Bythe kindness of Mr. Pollard, of the Audit Office, whogave me access to these vestiges of Old SomersetHouse, I am enabled to present the reader with threeof the inscriptions.

The most ancient runs thus :—
