covered piazza or verandah, is that in which the regentwill live. It Consists of one very large apartment infront, upwards of fifty feet long, and proportionablywide, designed for a saloon, in which to entertainstrangers—commanding, from its elevation, a fine viewof the island and the ocean—and a small neat roomat one end for a cabinet, to be furnished with an escri-toir, &c. The rest of the floor is divided into sleepingrooms, for himself, and one or two confidential at-tendants.
The expense of the building, exclusive of the stone,is estimated at six thousand dollars. It stands in anenclosure of several acres, which is to be planted, andkept in a state of cultivation: and the whole establish-ment will give quite a new aspect to Honoruru, fromwhatever point it is viewed.
Kaahumanu has also had a new house built duringthe year; it is of wood, and was prepared in all itsparts for erection, before it was brought from America .It is well papered and painted, and, in its dimensionsand general appearance, similar to some of our bestwooden houses at Cooper’s-town. These two buildings,with the consulate, which is also a two-story framehouses a smaller one belonging to Kaahumanu , and thetwo Mission houses, give quite an European aspect tothe town ; and while they render it more picturesque,by the contrast with the native huts, afford evidence ofthe civilization to which the nation is approaching.
