VISIT TO MR. RUGGLES AT HIDO. 363of these rising gradually one above another, as the coun-try gently ascended towards the mountains in the in-terior, presented for twenty or thirty miles in the south-east, a delightful forest scene, totally different in extentfrom any thing I had before witnessed on the Islands .

The Blonde anchored in the centre of the bay, andshortly after dinner the barge was lowered, to carry usto our friends on shore. After rowing half a mile, weentered a beautiful fresh-water creek, which winds itsway close to the Missionary enclosure, and in a fewminutes were welcomed to the cottage of Mr. Ruggles,where Mrs. Goodrich had resided during her husbandsabsence. They were greatly rejoiced at our unexpectedvisit to them in their remote and solitary abode, thoughtheir sympathy was deeply excited by the cause, and bythe evidence of deep-seated disease, visible in the countenance and person of a beloved friend.

The gentlemen who accompanied us were so muchpleased with the freshness and verdure of the shore, thesimplicity and rural beauty of the gardens which sur-rounded the humble dwellings of our companions, thatthey permitted the barge to return to the ship withoutthem, and spent the afternoon and took tea with us.

Besides a visit from the chaplain and surgeon to-day,we have had the pleasure of a call from Lord Byron , andthe first lieutenant, Mr. Ball, an amiable and kind man,and a particular favourite of the captain.They re-mained to tea with us, and expressed themselves highlydelighted with Hido.
