Four or five women, however, revoltedfrom the enemy, and brought information thatthe chiefs of Vavaoo, having now revengedthemselves on most of Toobo Nuhas mur-derers, had come to the resolution of waitinga little time without having recourse to any of-fensive measures, with a view of ascertainingwhat Finows real intentions were.

The fortress being now quite completed, andthe guns stationed one at each of the four en-trances, of which there were two in front (onthe inland side) and one on each of the othertwo sides ; Finow gave orders that a strongparty should go forth early in the morning, to-wards the enemys fortress, and destroy all theplantations they could come at, but in case ofan attack, they should make their retreat asspeedily as possible. In the afternoon they re-turned laden with yams, plantains, &c. but hav-ing met with a sudden attack from the enemy,had lost several of their men. They broughtintelligence that they had discovered a largefield of fine yams nearly full grown, but it wasso well defended that they could not with pru-dence make an attack upon it. Finow resolvedto remain quiet the following night, lest theenemy should be lying in wait for him, but thenight after that to proceed with a large andstrong party to plunder and destroy this planta-
