victims were taken in hand. It was in vainthat they begged their lives, protesting thatthey were not the persons they had taken themfor: in vain did Mr. Mariner point out thecruelty of the act, urging them at least to killthem first speedily, and cut off their heads after-wards : to this remonstrance they answered thattheir prisoners deserved to be severely punish-ed for the many atrocities they had committed;and as to killing them first, and cutting off theirheads afterwards, they thought it unnecessarytrouble. This horrible piece of cruelty -was ac-cordingly committed on the spot. They beganthe operation, (after having stripped themselves,to prevent their garments from getting bloody,)by haggling at the back of the neck; they thencut gradually round the throat, till they hadgot through every thing but the spine, whichthey divided by turning the head down, andgiving it a violent twist. This being done, they washed themselves, resumed their gnatoos, and proceeded with the four heads to the gar-rison. It was still early when they arrived, andthey found the king sitting with his friends onthe maldi drinking cava. The four heads werebrought to him by different men, and placed inthe middle of the circle upright with their facestowards Finow, who returned his thanks (ascustomary) to those who had killed them.
