At first they mistookher for a goddess, and their astonishment wasnot lessened when they recognised her counte-nance, and found her to be a person, whomthey had no doubt was killed in the generalmassacre of her family ; and this they thoughtmust be her apparition. But how agreeablywas their wonder softened down into the mostinteresting feelings, when the young chief re-lated to them the discovery of the cavern andthe whole circumstance of her escape. All theyoung men on board could not refrain envyinghim his happiness in the possession of so lovelyand interesting a creature.
