discouraging information, the native of Tonga ,with his scarifying shells, redoubled his per-suasions, ridiculed the remedies of the other,and, on understanding what effect they wouldhave, laughed most heartily at the idea ofcuring a sick man by means which would makea healthy man sick. The remedies of the sur-geon, however, were not more agreeable thanthose of the physician, and the patient was at aloss to know to whose care he should entrusthis health ; when the latter signified his inten-tion of taking some of his own physic, whichwas the best proof he could possibly give of hisconfidence in it: two equal doses were accord-ingly prepared; the patient took one, and thedoctor took the other. The cathartic was firstgiven, and the emetic about an hour after-wards : the latter operated in about anotherhour, and the former, in conjunction with it, inabout two hours and a half. They both evincedabundant evidence of their respective proper-ties, and the following morning Mr. Marinerfound himself perfectly well: which happy re-sult the man who wanted to bleed him couldby no means attribute to the remedies he hadtaken ! The Sandwich islander, notwithstand-ing he was much laughed at, particularly abouthis cathartics, obtained at length a considerableshare of credit for his skill. Finow took his
