supposed liable to break the barbs ; and in thisway, in the course of two or three minutes, hewithdrew the arrow, bringing with it a smallportion of the substance of the lungs, whichcould not be disengaged. During this part ofthe operation the patient was almost insensiblehe was held by those about him, to prevent anymischief arising from his struggles, which attimes were violent. The operator now carefullyexamined the arrow, and being satisfied thatevery barb (of which there were three rows)was entire, he ordered him to be gently turnedon the right side, so that the wound was de-pending, and to make it more completely so, aquantity of gnatoo was placed under him in twosituations, viz. under the shoulder, and underthe pelvis, in such a way that the orifice of thewound was evidently the most depending por-tion of the thorax. The patient being now per-fectly sensible, the operator desired him to makea full inspiration, enquiring whether it gave himmuch pain; and being answered that he couldbear it tolerably well, he desired him to makeseveral full inspirations from time to time, butnot so as to fatigue himself, and occasionally tomove his body gently: by these means a con-siderable quantity of blood was discharged.
