One of these cases wasthat of a man who performed the operation onhimself: his left testicle was greatly enlarged,being about five or six inches in diameter,and gave him, at times, severe lancinatingpains: two or three times he was about tohave the operation performed by a native ofFiji , but his courage failed him when he cameto the trial. One day when Mr. Mariner waswith him, he suddenly determined to performthe operation on himself; and it was not muchsooner said than done: he tied on the bandage,opened the scrotum with a very steady hand,in a fit of desperation divided the cord andcellular substance together, and fell senselesson the ground : the haemorrhage was very pro-fuse. Mr. Mariner called in some persons tohis assistance, and he was carried into a house,but did not become sensible for nearly an hour,and was in a very weak state from loss ofblood : this affair confined him to the house fortwo or three months. There was one rare in-stance of a man, both of whose testes wereaffected with some species of sarcoma, to a de-gree almost beyond credit: when he stood up,his feet were necessarily separated to the dis-tance of three quarters of a yard, and theloaded scrotum, or rather the morbid mass,reached to within six inches of the ground :
