All these circumstances appear veryequivocal: but Mr. Mariner has every reasonto believe that the venereal disease did notexist under any form, either at the Hapaiislands or Vavaoo, during the time that he wasthere; although, to his certain knowledge,three of the survivors of the Port au Prince ’screw had gonorrhoeas at the time the ship wastaken, one of whom had brought it from Eng-land, and the other two had contracted it atthe Sandwich islands. Several others of theship’s company had also venereal affections:but they fell in the general massacre on board.In the first place we must observe, in respectto those labouring under the diseases calledcdhi and palla, that the complaints are eithernot venereal, or that the venereal disease sub-sides in them, and the constitution cures itselfspontaneously. 2dly, That the organs of gene-ration are never affected previously to the moregeneral disease coming on. 3dly, That thesediseases are not known to be, or believed to becontracted by sexual intercourse. 4thly, That
