and no one but the Son comprehends the counsels arid designs 6fithe Father, with respect to the instruction and reformation ofmankind. I do not take upon me to say, that this is a wronginterpretation of our Saviours meaning, when he spoke thewords, 44 No one knoweth, &c. Nor if any one should, insteadof the instruction and reformation, have said the salvation andredemption of mankind, durst I have said that his interpretationhad been erroneous. The parallel place in Luke, x. 22. standsthus : 44 No one knoweth who the Son is but the Father, and whothe Father is but the Son. If any one should contend from theseexpressions, that no one but the Father and the Son is capableof comprehending the nature of the sonship of the one, or thepaternity of the other, I durst not have said that his inter-pretation of Luke had been a bad one. '

44 The fact is, that I was early in life accustomed to mathe-matical discussion, and the certainty attending it; and not meet-ing with that certainty in the science of metaphysics, of naturalor revealed religion, I have an habitual tendency to an hesitationof judgment, rather than to a peremptory decision on manypoints. But I pray God to pardon this my wavering in lessessential points, since it proceeds not from any immoral propen-sity, and is attended by a firm belief of a resurrection and afuture state of retributiori, as described in the Gospels..
