The principles, civil, and religious, of that great man havehitherto influenced, and as long as I live they will continue toinfluence, my public conduct; but in the precarious state of myhealth, and at my advanced age, I cannot consent to expose thetranquillity of this retirement -to be disturbed by the animadver-sions which (in these irritable and distempered times) would pro-bably attend the publication of my former letter.

I have no objection to my name appearing in the list of sub-scribers, and instead of five I wish my subscription to be tenguineas.

My Lord,

Allow me to express my high approbation of your letterto Lord Fingall. I concur with you in every line of it. Theappointment of the Catholic bishops ought to be in the King, ifthey are to be paid by the state; and if they are to be paid by theCatholics themselves, the appointment ought to be in them, butexclusive of all foreign influence, recommendation, or confirmation.If they do not accede to this, or to something similar to this, theywill act on a principle which I did not expect, nor can approve.
