Your faithful and affectionate friend and servant,

R. Landaff.

The following is the last letter which I wrote to my friendthe Duke of Grafton, who died on the 14th of the followingMarch:

My dear Lord Duke,

Though I know not how to attempt to console you for theloss of our common friends, Mr. Smyth and Mr. Harrison, yet Icannot forbear troubling Your Grace, lest such an omission onsuch an occasion should indicate an indifference which I amincapable of feeling towards yourself.

Lady Augusta, I hope, will have the goodness to gratify myanxiety about your own health, as I have been informed that youhave not lately been so stout as you were some months ago. Butwhence is if, my good friend, that I speak of anxiety, since I feela strong confidence, (an humble, I trust, and not a presumptuousconfidence,) that men like ourselves will be proper objects of God smercy, and obtain that eternal life which he hath promised throughJesus Christ , to all who love and fear him.

*' £ This is not the language of self-justifying sinners; it is thelanguage of men who believe the Gospel, and who in greaf self-abasement venerate the adorable and inscrutable cause of everything. I am, with affectionate concern for Your Graces healthand spirits,

R. Lanhaff.
