GENERAL OBSERVATIONSON THE GENUS GELE-CHIA.
Characteristic.
The perfect insects of the genusGelechia may be most easily recog-nized by the form of the labial palpiand the form of the posterior wings;yet in this huge genus both theseorgans undergo very considerablemodifications.
Unfortunately, however, we donot find any such definite differencesas to enable us to divide the genus,and the character of the greatersmoothness of the second joint ofthe palpi (well seen in G. populella),on which Herrich-Schaffer relied forthe foundation of his genus Ana-campsis, shows such gentle gradations,and even in species which from theirhabits are evidently closely allied,shows manifest slight differences, thatit seems unfitted to be used as ageneric character.
The labial palpi are long, recurved,with the terminal joint thin, smoothand pointed, the second joint slightlybroader beneath, but scarcely re-sembling a brush—sometimes quitesmooth. The smoothness of the ter-minal joint separates Gelechia fromParasia and Chelaria, and the absenceof a tuft at the end of the second joint

SUR LE GENRE GELECHIA.
Caractère essentiel.
On peut le plus facilement recon-naître les papillons du genre Gelechiaen regardant les palpes labiaux, etla coupe des ailes postérieures ; ilest vrai cependant que dans ce genretrès-vaste ces deux organes subissentdes modifications assez considér-ables.
Mais malheureusement nous netrouvons aucune différence asseztranchée qui permettrait de diviserle genre, car le caractère fournipar le deuxième article des palpescomme étant plus lisse (ce qu’onvoit assez distinctement chez laG. populella ), sur lequel Herrich-Schâffer s’est appuyé pour fonderson genre Anacampsis, nous montredes gradations imperceptibles et offremême dans les espèces qui, d’aprèsleurs mœurs, sont évidemment très-voisines, des qualités distinctiveslégères, de sorte que ce caractèrene nous paraît pas propre à servircomme signe générique.
Les palpes labiaux sont longs,recourbés, avec l’article terminalmince, lisse et pointu ; le deuxièmearticle est un peu plus large en-dessous, mais ne ressemble guère àune brosse—quelquefois même il esttout-à-fait lisse. A l’article terminallisse on peut distinguer le genreGelechia des Parasia et Chelaria,
