GENERAL OBSERVATIONSON THE GENUS ELA-CHISTA.
Characteristic.
This genus is one of the most na-tural of those of the smaller Lepi-doptera. The perfect insects, whichvary in colour from white to black, and in markings from dull sombre-looking species, toothers all spangledwith gold and silver, have all a greatstructural similarity. The head issmooth, that is, clothed with flat, appressed scales; the palpi are ratherlong and slender, slightly recurved ;the antennm are moderately long, simple; the anterior wings are smoothand narrow, and the posterior wingsnarrow and pointed.
The genus Antispila, so long incor-porated with Elachista, has shortdrooping palpi, the antennae arehardly half the length of the ante-rior wings, and the posterior wingsare proportionately far broader thanin Elachista ; Stephensia (which com-prises only the single species, Brun-nichelbi) also differs, in having thepalpi drooping and rather short, theanterior wings are more pointed thanin Elachista, and the costa is slightlyindented beyond the middle ; we find, besides, a slight difference in theneuration of the posterior wings.Laxerna can readily be distinguishedfrom Elachista by the raised tufts on
