Synonymy.
Though it is not improbable thatthis insect was known to some of theolder authors, we do not find in thewritings of Linnaeus or Fabriciusany descriptions that can be appliedto it, and it was not till a figure ap-peared in Hiibner as Tinea cygnipen-nella that the insect could boast of aname. Subsequently Haworth, in his“ Lepidoptera Britannica,” describedit as 1’or red ana cygnipennis, and Ste-phens, in his“ Illustrations,” describedthe male with its dark posterior wingsas Aphelosetia scmialbella , restrictingthe name Cygnipennella to the fe-male. Treitschke abbreviated thename to Cygnella (the terminationpennella being confined with him tothe species of his genus Ornix, whichnearly corresponds with our presentgenera Gracilaria and Coleophora),and placed the species in his genusAdela, a heterogenous group com-prising many very discordant spe-cies ; hence the insect we are con-sidering was not quite as much outof place with him as it would be iflocated in the genus Adela at thepresent day. Duponchel, retainingTreitschke’s specific name, placedthe insect in the genus Elachista.Zeller, in the “Isis,” of 1839, givesthis species as Elachista cygnipen-nella, and under this name Douglashas described the transformations ofthe insect in the “ Transactions ofthe Entomological Society," vol. ii.N. S. Stainton describes the species
Syracuse.
