GRACILARIA SYRINGELLA.
[Plate II. Fig. 2.
cillaria Anastomosis, and under thisdesignation Curtis described andfigured it in 1833 in his “BritishEntomology,” and gave a notice ofthe habits of the larva. In the sameyear Bouché, in his “ Garten-In-secten,” noticed it under the name ofTinea Syringella, and Treitschke de-scribed it in his “ Schmetterlingevon Europa,” under the name ofOrnix Arclecepennella. Stephens inhis “ Illustrations” describes it asGracillaria Syringella ; Zeller in the“Isis” of 1838, noticing the speciesmentioned by Reaumur, applies to itthe designation Ornix Syringella, andDuponchel, in his “ Lépidoptèresde France,” describes it as GracillariaArdecepennella, but his figure is sobad that it can scarcely be recog-nised for this species, besides it ismuch too small. In Duponchel’s“ Supplément” the insect is againdescribed and figured under thename of Œ cophora Syringella, Du-ponchel expressing his surprise thatso common an insect had been over-looked by Treitschke, and hencenever suspected that it was identicalwith the Ardecepennella of Treitschkeand of himself. The species wasnext described by Zeller in the 2ndvolume of the “Linnæa Entomolo-gica,” under the name of GracilariaSyringella, which name is retained byStainton in the “ Transactions of theEntomological Society of London,”vol. ], New Series, and in his volumeof the “ Insecta Britannica by Freyin his “ Tineen und Pterophoren derSchweiz and by Herrich-Schaffer(who also figures the insect) in his“ Schmetterlinge von Europa.”
