GENERAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE GENUS BUCCULATRIX.

Cuculipennella, omitting all notice ofthe varieties.

Clearly up to this period thestudy of the genus Bucculatrix wasin a backward state ; the twospecies semi-indicated by Haworthhad slipped again into oblivion, andDe Geer’s species had become sothoroughly forgotten, that in 1833Treitschke had described it anew asElachista Rhamnifoliella. In 1834,Fischer von Rbslerstamm publishedhis illustrations of its transforma-tions. Treitschke also describedone new species of this genus asElachista Gnaphaliella. In 1838,Duponchel figured in his “ Lépi-doptères de France,” vol. xi., fourspecies, Boyerella, Rhamnifoliella,Gnaphaliella and Hippocastanella,placing them all in his genus Ela-chista.

In 1839, Zeller, in the “Isis,”placed in section A. of his genusLyonetia 7 species referable to thisgenus, viz., Rhamnifoliella (to whichhe quoted the reference to Ge Geer),Albedinella (the Boyerella of Du-ponchel), Hippocastani (the Hippo-castanella of Duponchel), and fournew species, Cristatella, Nigricomella,Cidarella and Cratœgi. Gnaphaliellahe erroneously placed in his genusLithocolletis. In 1842 appeared thefourth supplementary volume of Du-ponchel, in which we find Albedinellaand Cratœgi badly figured and de-scribed.

The next real step in the study ofthe genus was in 1848; in that yearthe third volume of the “ Linnæa

Evidemment jusqu’à cette époquel’étude du genre Bucculatrix n’étaitpas très-avancée ; les deux espèces,à moitié indiquées par Haworth,étaient déjà oubliées, et l’espèce deDe Geer était tellement perdue, qu’en1833 Treitschke la décrivit commenouvelle, sous le nom d 'ElachistaRhamnifoliella. En 1834 Fischer vonRôslerstamm publia ses illustrationsdes transformations de cette espèce.Treitschke a de plus décrit une es-pèce nouvelle de ce genre sous lenom à’ Elachista Gnaphaliella. En1838 Duponchel figura dans ses “ Lé-pidoptères de France,” vol. xi., quatreespèces, savoir la Boyerella, la Rham-nifoliella. i la Gnaphaliella , et YHippo-castanella, les plaçant dans son genreElachista.

En 1839 Zeller, dans l’“Isis,” aplacé dans la section A. de son genreLyonetia sept espèces que nous rap-portons au genre Bucculatrix, c’est àdire, la Rhamnifoliella (pour laquelleil cita les observations de De Geer),

Y Albedinella (la Boyerella de Du-ponchel), Y Hippocastani (Y Hippocas-tanella de Duponchel), et quatreespèces nouvelles, savoir, la Crista-tella, la Nigricomella, la Cidarella etla Cratœgi. La Gnaphaliella fut à tortplacée par lui dans son genre Litho-colletis. En 1842 a paru le quatrièmevolume supplémentaire de Dupon-chel, dans lequel nous trouvons demauvaises figures et descriptions de

Y Albedinella et de la Cratœgi.
