BUCCULATRIX AURIMACULELLA.

[Plate I. Fig. 1.

the black excrement is irregularlydeposited. About the end of Marchor beginning of April the larvacomes out of its mine and spins awhite cocoonet on the under sur-face of the leaf; in this it lies in ahorse-shoe shape for several days, and then, having moulted, it emergesfrom its retreat, leaving its cast skinbehind it; it then feeds on the ex-ternal surface of the leaf, gnawingit from the under side ; whenfull-fed it retires to the stem ofthe plant or to a neighbouring grassleaf, and there forms its elongate, white, ribbed cocoon. Towards theend of May or beginning of Junethe perfect insect makes its appear-ance. A second brood of the larvaemay be found early in July, andthese produce moths in August,

Description of the Imago.

This insect cannot readily be con-founded with any other of the genus;it is true that in Cidarella the an-terior wings have two pair of yellow-ish-white spots, but the first dorsalspot is not there connected with thebase of the wing by a streak alongthe fold, and the anterior wings aremuch shorter in Cidarella than in Au-rimaculella ; besides which the colourof the head gives an immediate pointof distinction,in Cidarella it is fer-ruginous, in . Aurimaculella black.Further, it may be observed, that inAurimaculella the anterior wings arerather shining, with smooth scales ;in Cidarella these scales are coarserand not shining. Nigricomella ismuch more nearly allied to Aurima-

Description du Papillon.
