LUNAR CELESTIAL PHENOMENA.

It is manifest that at each lunar station the earthchanges in phase precisely as the moon changes withus. When we see the moon full, the lunarians have'the earth ‘ new,’ that is, wholly dark • when we seethe moon at her third quarter, the earth, as seen fromthe moon, is at her first quarter; when the moon isnew, the earth is ‘ full ’; and, lastly, when the moon isat her first quarter, the earth is at her third quarter.But in the case of the earth seen from the moon, thechanges are all gone through while she is in one andthe same part of the heavens ; and though they neces-sarily depend on the sun’s distance from the earth,this distance changes by the sun’s apparent motionaround the lunar heavens, and not, as in the case of themoon, by the motions chiefly of the lesser luminary.Moreover it is manifest that the earth’s phases occurat different hours of the lunar day at different sta-tions. Where the earth is seen on the meridian, c newearth ’ necessarily occurs at noon-day, ‘ first quarter ’at sunset, ‘ full earth’ at midnight, and ‘ third quarter ’at sunrise. Where the earth is seen on the east of themeridian, ‘ new earth ’ occurs in the forenoon, 1 firstquarter ’ in the afternoon, ‘ full earth ’ between sunsetand midnight, and ‘ third quarter ’ between midnightand sunrise. Where the earth is seen on the west ofthe meridian, ‘ new earth ’ occurs in the afternoon,

‘ first quarter ’ between sunset and midnight, ‘ fullearth ’ between midnight and sunrise, and thirdquarter in the forenoon.
