bow, and was built by tbe Thames Iron Works and Ship-building Company; it is 2,811 tons, builders measure-ment, and is 220 feet long between perpendiculars, and53 feet wide, with a draught of water of 14 feet 6 inches.

Plates 3 to 8 inclusive.These illustrate the ar-rangement and details of Mr. Spencers patent auxiliarysurface condensers and engines for the iron screwsteam-ship Frankfort, of Liverpool. The type of theengine is vortical, inverted direct action. The con-densers are tubular, with outside condensation; thepumps being on the combined principle, similar to thoseadopted by Messrs. Penn in H.M.S. Aretliusa. Themotion is derived from the steam piston-rods for thepumps, and the arrangements and form of the valves canbo understood from the drawings. The cylinders ar6fitted with the ordinary slide valves and expansion valvesat the back of the same.

The following particulars will render the. several por-tions to bo understood without further notice ;

Thecondensers aredescribed in page 259; also the cylinders in page277; the slide valve in page 286 ; the piston inpage 278, and the link motion in page 292 ; to whichthe following particulars, supplied by the firm, are nowadded:
