Temperature of the spirit by Fahrenheit s thermometer.

A modification of Sikes’ hydrometer has beenconstructed of glass, and is in the shape of an ordi-nary hydrometer, the stem being divided into de-grees from 1 to 100; it carries a small delicatespirit thermometer in the bulb, to which a scale isaffixed, having references from 0° to 12°, correspond-ing to Fahrenheit’s scale from 32° to 80°. Thetemperature of the alcoholic liquors is indicated bythe small thermometer ; and the calculations in thetables accompanying the instrument are made to

accord with these numbers. Tables are suppliedwith the hydrometer, which are headed by thedegrees and half degrees of the tliermomotric scale ;and the corresponding amount of spirit over or underproof at the respective degree of the table is placedopposite each degree of the hydrometer.

When the instrument is used to ascertain thevalue of a liquid, the degree of immersion and alsothat of the thermometer are noted; on referring tothe table headed by the observed temperature, the
