through the glasses. Lost sight of for a few milesbeneath the dip to Samaden , the road reappeared to-gether with a companion thread, the river Inn, and bothfinally vanished from our view somewhere between Zutzand Zernetz.

The Baths were regained without adventure. Andthus this maiden peak, although capable of deceivingthe most experienced judges, yielded without a struggleto the first assault. Its reputation has survived itsfall, and I saw it lately catalogued in some foreignpublication as ‘ non ancora sealato.’

The very fact, however, which makes my story shortand dull, the surprising easiness of the peak, gives itthe greater interest for the ordinary traveller. If some ofthe native hunters will he at the trouble of making them-selves familiar with the route, there is no reason whateverwhy the ascent should not become a frequent excursionfrom the Baths. The walk is even within the powersof many ladies, and they might ride to within at mostthree hours of the top. Our descent had been delayed by the state of myfriend’s knee, which had been suffering from an oldsprain, and now refused plainly to do duty for somedays to come. It was vexatious enough, for on thenext night we were to have slept out for the Disgrazia. But necessity knows nothing of plans, and he resignedhimself to return as he had come to Sondrio, while Iresolved to make a push for the same place over themountains, and if possible to climb the Disgrazia bythe way.
