Tlie institute was founded in 1874, and the astronomical instrumentswere mounted in 1878.

Instruments:

(a) The Meridian circle, constructed by the Societe Genevoise, with24-inch objective, by C. A. Steinheil.

(c) The Equatorial made by theSociete Genevoise pour la construc-tion dinstruments de physique mounted on an isolated pillar, under amovable dome of 164 feet (5 meters) diameter. The instrument is pro-vided with a centrifugal regulator, constructed according to Prof. M.Tiiurys directions, with position micrometer, spectroscope, and cameraobscura.

(d) Spectroscope.

(g) The astronomical clock was constructed by Theodor Knoblich,in Hamburg.

The mean time is given by means of an electric pendulum, by M.Hipp, in Neuenburg .

Both clocks connect with a number of dials in various rooms, andalso with the chronograph.
