The Loyal Observatory is situated in the Ajuda Park (Tapada daAjuda), about 1,300 meters west of Lisbon . It had its origin in 1857,when the late King, D. Pedro Y, made a first donation of 30,000 rnil-reis for the establishment of an astronomical observatory.
The building was commenced in 1861. It consists of a central two-story octagonal structure, surmounted by a revolving tower 11 metersin diameter, containing the great equatorial, with four one-story wings, corresponding to the cardinal points of the compass. In the southernwing is the principal entrance, with a peristyle and vestibule which com-municates with the lower and upper stories of the central structure.
The whole length of the building is G7.1 meters E—W. Its breadthis 42 meters.
A three-story dwelling-house for the personnel is built 36.5 meterseast of the observatory. A part of its gro und floor is occupied by amechanical workshop for repairs and modifications in the instruments
