Proposed in 1786. Established in the Saint Yin fa tower of theRoyal Palace, the ancient residence of the Emirs during the Arabiandominion. The first complete vertical circle made by Ramsden, andfinished in 1789, was mounted in this observatory. Piazzi used it from1792 to 1813 for the observations which served him as a basis for hisfamous catalogue. Ceres was discovered at Palermo on the first dayof the nineteeth century.
