Oberbliege, into which flows a cascade, from a wide ex-cavation in the rocks above it, is the village of Leugel-bach. The glassy surface of the lake reflects the sur-rounding scenery, consisting of ponderous forests of ever-lasting green, amidst which the spires of the villagechurch have a very picturesque effect. The source of theWater which gushes with so much violence into the lake,has not yet been discovered.

Schwanden, a large village, is situated in a pretty ro-mantic valley, on the borders of the Sernft. Pliny speaks°f its ancient inhabitants, and classes them among the^haetii. The village is neat and pretty, and the riverwinds nearly round it. .

The village of Nider Urnen was nearly destroyed afew years ago, by a terrible deluge, w hich fell in torrents,a nd overwhelmed bridges, houses, windmills, convents,castles, and broken pieces of rock of an enormous size.The inhabi tants with difficulty saved their lives on the tops°f their houses, where they were obliged to remain severalhours, uncertain of their future fate. The number of treesWhich fell is almost inconceivable. They now lie in thev alley, intermixed with huge heaps of stones, in one un-distinguished ruin. For weeks after this catastrophe,110 roads could be formed, as all the bridges were wash-e d away ; and the storm became so general, and lasted80 long, that the people in the neighbouring vallies beganfe apprehend the most dreadful consequences.
