feet thick, to the no small admiration of a very ingeniousand well-informed architect who examined it with thegreatest attention, and conferred great commendationson the construction of the kitchen-chimney, which isthe only one in the hermitage, and is so contrived thatthe heat may pass into the six other apartments. Thewindows, cut in the rock, are many hundred feet abovethe river; and as the rock is perpendicular, it is verydismal to look from them. The first hermit that in-habited this dwelling, and who had retired from theWorld for the most melancholy reasons, employed thirtyyears of his life in forming a habitation, consisting ofonly a small bed-chamber and sitting-room, and ascend-ed and descended the rock with the assistance of ar ope, when necessity required. The second possessor,whose name was John Du Pres, and who had lived inthe world with much splendour, greatly enlarged itAccording to his fancy. Disgusted with the ingratitude°f his friends, he determined to withdraw himself fromthem, and to spend the remainder of his days in thesame solitary manner as P. Anach did at Vaucluse.^ith the assistance of a servant, he employed five andtwenty years in forming the grand saloon, the chapel,the stairs, refectory, and chimney.
