in the prosperity of their neighbours. They show thegoodness of their hearts in a thousand little attentionsand civilities to strangers. The common people possessthe manners which are characteristic of the country.Most people visit Schaffhausen at the time they goto view the noble fall of the Rhine . There are twogreat annual fairs, where many rich and beautifularticles are brought from Paris, Vienna , and other largecapitals. Before the last revolution, sumptuary lawswere in force; but within these few years, the ladieshave begun to decorate themselves with embroidery,lace, and diamonds, and appear at the balls as splen-didly attired as the ladies at Paris. The young womendistinguish themselves from the married ones by themanner of dressing their hair; which consists of asingle plait, while the married ladies have two. Thecolour of their hair being generally brown, it looks verypretty contrasted with the fairness of their complexions,which are very much admired by those who visit thecanton. I never saw so many beautiful faces collectedtogether as I beheld in a little chapel near Lauffen .The congregation was chiefly composed of peasants,■whose countenances bespoke the tranquillity of theirsouls. The devout attention they paid to their minister,proved how much they revered the good man, who wasdelivering a very pathetic discourse on the death ofone of the principal magistrates, who had lost his
