As one of the million proofs of the excess to which thedepravity of human nature will often reach, whenever theignorant are directed by the depraved in power, I willmention a circumstance that occurred at Naples in thesquare before the royal palace, on the 8th of July, 1799.i “ His Majesty,” the king, with Admiral Nelson and Acton,
| were on board of the British flag ship, anchored off the| palace. The Russians and the English occupied the fortsand all the guard-houses in the city. Cardinal Uuffo, andhis chiefs of the army of the “ Holy faith,” were perambu-i lating the streets, when in the face of all this panoply ofcoercion, the zealous partizans of royalty collected animmense quantity of faggots, piled them up under the! windows of the royal palace, lit the fire, and then, into themidst of the crackling flames, cast five living men, “ enemiesof social order,” and—-I must proceed-—tore with their loyalteeth the smoking flesh from off the bones and swallowedmouthfuls, a sacrifice to the demon of legitimacy! It isI further necessary to remark, that on the very day of thisexhibition, so gratifying to the friends of royalty, additionallists of proscriptions prepared at Palermo by QueenCaroline , from previous notes, her own hatreds, and theenmities and suggestions of Castelcicala, the peculiarfavourite of George III , of England, arrived at Naples; onwhich, orders were given for the re-commencement of thegeneral work of death, which had already been begun onthe persons of some of the most eminent patriots. ThePoles are pitied by Englishmen—Englishmen have alwaysaided in the far worse oppression of the Italians ! ThePoles are all masters (nobles), or slaves (serfs). In Italy ,a middle class —a people, the most enlightened in Europe ,should surely merit the sympathy of the British people, ifnot of the aristocratic Janissary agents of a British Tory
