two or three, and sometimes four horses to draw one olthem.

In. hinds under good management, there is no need for tilebrake, it being superseded by the use of the oblique lmrrow. There is also a small light harrow, with a greater number, and, likewise shorter teeth, than the common sort, but inother respects made in the same formits purpose is for har-rowing in grass seeds, when sown among wheat, or any otherkind:of grain. In harrowing, much time is often lost in turn-ing at the ridge-end, especially when two or more harrowsare employed together, by their pitching on the top of eachother. To remedy this in the turnings, or when the harrowsare employed upon rough land, sometimes a piece of wood isfixed on the two outside bulls that are contiguous to eachother, and raised about eight or ten inches above the uppersurface of the harrow. But it seems preferable to couple everytwo harrows together with hasps and hooks of iron, in sucha manner as to allow each harrow to rise or fall according tothe inequality in the surface of the ground whereon they areemployed. By this mode of connecting the harrows, theyare kept at a proper distance from one another, besides beingprevented from stalling on the top of each other in the turn-ings.

To prevent any two teeth of the harrow from moving inthe same track, various methods have been attempted. Themost simple seems to be, that of making the harrow of arliomboidal form, the angle of which must always be ac-cording to the number of teeth, or the distance betweenthese teeth and the spaces between the bulls, so that the teethmay divide the surface which the harrow covers into equalsmall parts, and move in lines equidistant from one another. But as the harrow generally made use of is of a square form, and drawn by one corner, so that it must move in a diagonaldirection, and as several of the teeth in its hinder part movealmost in the same track with those going before, and othersmove in lines at a considerable distance from one another,
