1 • The dowel sickness is by far the most fatal; and thatspecies of it which is the most common, has its chief seat inthe stomach of the animal, constituting what nosologiststerm gastritis. In this variety of the disease, the belly isprodigiously swelled, the carcase much discoloured, and asour pituitous matter is diffused through the whole system, especially the fleshy parts. The fat appears least changed; butalthough it melts to grease, it is always mixed with blood. The body, when opened, emits a strong sulphuric smell, andthe stomach and bowels are much distended with fetid air,and appear of a red colour. The two first stomachs areleast, and the third occasionally injured; but the fourthstomach (pylorus) is always thickened, often inflamed, andfrequently mortified towards the intestines. The food in thestomachs, especially in the third, is so dry, that it may becrumbled into dust between the fingers. The kidneys are somuch mortified as to resemble a mass of putrid gore; theliver is much affected, and the heart and lungs appear redand inflamed.

In a second species of bowel sickness, constituting the dis-ease called enteritis, the stomach is little affected; but thesmall guts, where the disease is understood to have commen-ced, arc mortified, black, soft, and almost rotten ; and somethink they have observed parts of them folded or double. The carcase is less swelled, not so blue nor putrid; but thefood in the maw is very stiff' and solid. To this variety, MrHogg has given the name of dry braxy.

A third species has been denominated by Mr Hogg andothers, the water-braxy. On opening the body, the bowelsare found swimming in bloody water, although none of it iscontained within the intestines. The gall-bladder is contract-ed, nearly empty of bile, and the membranes which connectit with other parts are much inflamed. The urinary blad-der is empty or nearly so, and some red spots appear on thesmaller apartments of the stomach, and as the disease in thisvariety seems to have its seat in the peritonccum, it has been
