cap or bandage. A composition of one pint of tar, and fourof train oil, applied to the parts likely to be affected, has beenfound to give an effectual security against flies.

Among the accidents peculiar to sheep, what is calledaxvald or atvaldmg, deserves to be noticed on account of itsfrequently proving fatal, It is most apt to happen when itgrows warm after a shower, any time from the beginning ofMay until the sheep are shorn. The sheep lie down andturn themselves over on their back to rub, and when theground happens to be level or somewhat hollow, the bulkand weight of their fleeces disable them from recovering theirfeet; in this state they soon swell, and die in a few hours ifnot assisted. This accident happens more frequently withthe larger than the smaller breeds.

It has been already mentioned, that a number of sheep areoften lost in severe snow-storms. This is called smooring orsmothering, and may be prevented in a great measure bybelts or clumps of trees planted in proper situations. Evenstone-walls inclosing a circular area, octagon, or other par-ticular form according to the situation, have been found ex-ceedingly useful as a security against the driving storm.
