CONTROVERSY RESPECTING THE NEW HAMPSHIRE GRANTS.
they ceded to the state of Vermont all the lands together with the Islands in Lake Champlain Lyingto the Eastward of the following bounds to witt, Beginning at the North west corner of the Stateof Massachusetts thence westward along the south boundary of the township of Pownall to thesouthwest corner thereof thence northerly along the western boundaries of the Township of PownallBennington Shaftsbury Arlington Sandgate Rupert Pawlet Wells and Poultney as the said Townshipsare now held or possessed to the river commonly called Poultney River thence down the same throughthe middle of the deepest Channel of East Bay and the waters thereof to where the same communi-cate with Lake Champlain thence through the middle of the deepest channel of Lake Champlain tothe Eastward of the Islands called the Four Brothers and the westward of the Islands called GrandIsle and Long Isle or the two Heroes and to the westward of the Isle La Motte to the forty fifthdegree of North Latitude in the consideration of Vermont paying to the State of New York ThirtyThousand dollars within a time therein limited which sum of Thirty thousand dollars it is matterof notoriety bears no proportion to the value of private property so ceded .”—Petition of TheophylackBache # others.
