The Russians kept up a constant fire. At 11 o’clock,from the Garden Battery, a shower of small shellswas thrown to the right of the advanced trench, butthey burst in the air.

The two reliefs broke ground, and obtained coveralong a portion of the new boyau leading to thesecond parallel, Right approach ; they also collectedstone for revetting the banquette, which was piledon the reverse of the trench; the whole of theexterior of the drain was cleared during the firstrelief.
