Working parties were employed as follows :

Twenty men at the cave in the Picquet houseravine, to form a grand magazine ; 190 men inthe 2d parallel, increasing the parapet and deepeningand levelling the trench ; 50 men in No. 10 battery,levelling terrepleine, filling sandbags, heightening andthickening parapet and traverses, completing maga-zine ; revetments continued. The 2d relief wereemployed in the same works, with the exception of 40men, who carried sandbags from the Cavalry Picquetto the batteries, a portion of whom were afterwardsfilling sandbags.

The enemy commenced a heavy fire from the Redanand Barrack batteries on our working parties, whichcontinued for some time, until I requested the navalofficer in command to stop the fire, which was effec-tually done by some few rounds from No. 2 battery.I observed a large convoy coming into the town alongthe road under Fort Severnaia. The enemy hadmuch increased the works on the Quarry Hill lastnight, and were working during the morning.

Whilst the flag of truce was flying, I saw a largeforce occupying the quarry works; I should imaginebetween 300 and 400 men. One gun was disabled,an 8-inch, in No. 3 battery. One casualty occurredin Greenhill by a Russian rifle shot. A private of the20th Regiment was wounded in the shoulder, and onecasualty occurred in the Picquet house battery, somesplinters from a round shot having taken away theunder lip of an artilleryman.

Working parties were employed improving thecover in the advanced trenches on the left, clearingout trench, and improving the communication to therifle-pit a. in the right advance ; throwing upearth , and completing the exterior slope of No. 13battery ; completing traverses in the left boyau, nearthe 2d pnrallel ; improving cover in the left boyau,near battery No. 13, and in repairing damages causedby the enemy’s fire in the 21-gun battery.

The Sappers were employed clearing away stone inthe advanced trenches on the left ; repairing therevetment of the 21-gun battery, and superintending.The carpenters took up the platform of No. 10 gun in21-gun battery, and commenced relaying another plat-form for a 68-pounder gun, also the 2d platform fromthe left in No. 12 mortar battery, and commencedlaying a gun platform in its place.

The enemy kept up a steady fire of shell on theworks, and knocked out several gabions in ouradvanced trenches, but no serious damage was sus-tained, and the casualties by the fire were few.
