A heavy musketry fire was commenced on theFrench Left attack at about 7.30 r.M., which was keptup with great force till 9 i\ji., when it slackenedsomewhat, hut continued more or less violent allnight. It was very severe at about 3 a.ii. ; the objectand results could not be seen from Left attack.
Killed, 2 rank and file. Wounded, 4 rank and file.

the advanced works. The clear moonlight night wasvery unfavourable ; I, however, succeeded in accom-plishing my object. A detachment constituting a por-tion of the working party worked remarkably slowlyand unwillingly.
A Russian working party was very busily em-ployed the whole night in the quarries in front of theRedan, and in deepening the trench joining thequarries to one of their rifle-pits.

No. 10 battery, 3 carpenters and 12 men preparingto lay three platforms ; 8 men deepening left commu-nication ; 10 men making traverse between 2 and 3new gun portions ; 20 filling sandbags on right andin rear of battery, 500 filled. 32-pounder gun rightof No. 8 batteiy, 3 carpenters, 3 miners, and 10 menpreparing ground for platform, which is finished andlaid ; 1 Sapper and 16 men completing revetment onright of No. 9 battery, second parallel ; 2 Sappersand 20 men making traverse, nearly completed ; 20men fetching sandbags from Cavalry Picquet, andcarrying to end of road to proposed battery ; 71 menfilling sandbags, 1,500 filled.
Sappers employed generally superintending, andlaying platforms in 21-guu batteiy.
Working party of the Line employed as follows :—
21-gun battery, 40 men repairing magazines,traverses, 8cc.
Sandbag batteiy, No. 13, 40 men increasing theparapets, finishing traverse in front of magazine.
Left advance sap, 100 men improving cover ofparallel in rear of captured rifle-pit e.
Communication to rifle-pit a on the right, 40 menemployed improving cover and removing rock.l
The work was satisfactory, and no casualties re-ported in the working party.
One man of the covering party was killed, and onewounded in the captured screen e, by a round shotcoming through the parapet.
The liurter with fighting bolt for No. 23 gun,21-gun battery, did not arrive.
